by suzyandchris1

One of the most worthwhile things I have done in life was to invite a homeless immigrant to live with me and help him to get back to his family in Slovakia. For the week that he stayed, I felt like I was actually doing something with my life, not just watching it pass by. Obviously, this was taking a risk; other similar adventures have ended up being a bit messy (sorry again, Lynne).

We don’t do stuff like this much; it doesn’t fit with the human quest for security, predictability and comfort. People who have standard of living substantially below ours make us uncomfortable and it’s a dangerous thing to let them in too close. They could mess up our comfortable little life.

We all have a big problem though. Our quest for a predictable comfortable life leaves us bored out of our minds. We spend half our life not taking these risks for fear of jeopardising our comfort and security. But we spend the other half trying to escape from the monotony we have created (through television, holidays, nights on the town, theme parks, alcohol, drugs, affairs, and anything else we can invent).

We’ve fallen into the same trap here. When you are in a new country with a culture you don’t understand, it becomes really important to be ‘cautious’ and to be ‘wise’ in how we act. And so we set about finding a sensible little life. We make sure we don’t teach people that when they see a muzungu, they can ask for handouts. We make sure that we don’t start giving away things we can’t keep up. We make sure that no-one takes advantage of our ignorance. Bit by bit, under the disguise of ‘wisdom’, fear and the quest for security and predictability take over.

Then God speaks: Walk in love, not in fear. Don’t keep your brothers and sisters at arms length; it is time to open up your life to all the people I am sending your way. All you have, I have given you and I’ll keep providing for you as you give it all away. Trust me.

And so this is our challenge.
To happily give away what we have, without concern for what we will eat tomorrow or the next day.
To embrace the people we’ve kept at arms length (here, these are the people who spend the majority of each day absolutely hammered or the people who are so poor they have no shoes or no teeth).
To let love and compassion triumph over ‘wisdom’ and fear even if that makes life a bit messy.
What does it look like where you are?
